I was introduced to the work of Zora Neale Hurston thirty years ago by colleagues of mine doing their doctoral work on her writings. She was definitely a fascinating woman, as were all the women of the Harlem Renaissance. I believe her independent nature made her a target of the hostility she received later in life.
